  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an extremely rare WWII anti-axis cardboard countertop store display. NUTS is the name of the display. The manufacturer holes on the advertising sign are designed to hold bags of nuts in a store. NUTS also refers to die-cut images of German (AH), Italian (Mussolini) and Russian (Stalin) leaders of the Axis countries during World War Two. This cardboard is dated 1940, a year before the United States joined the second world war. This poster is designed by Oliver V. Chadwick and his cardboard shows that there are nuts for sale, but subtly shows that Axis leaders are also 'nuts'.

As in Britain, American propaganda portrayed the war as a battle between good and evil, allowing the government to encourage its citizens to fight a "just war" and to use themes of resistance in and liberation of the occupied countries. Even before entering World War II, President Roosevelt urged every American to consider the consequences if dictatorships won in Europe and Asia.

Artists and writers were divided on whether to incite hatred for the enemy, which sparked debate. The government rarely intervened in such debates, only occasionally offering suggestions for artistic directions.

This cardboard countertop is in great shape. It has some signs of wear on the edges, especially on the heads of the Axis leaders. It shows signs of minor staining on the right side of the cardboard. The black paint has disappeared in some places, but the overall condition is good. The cardboard can stand upright and measures 22” by 22”

    The cardboard bears the text:

    NUTS
