Original U.S. WWII 1917A1 Browning .30cal Machine Gun M7 Canvas and Leather Cover - Boyt 1942

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a WWII USGI M 7 Canvas cover for the 1917A1 Browning Water-Cooled Machine Gun. This cover is made from heavy canvas with heavy stitching, lift-the-dot snaps, and leather reinforcements to protect the easily damaged portions of the gun. There is even a leather "boot" to accommodate the pintle when mounted.

The cover is marked with black stenciling on the side:

COVER, MACHINE GUN, M7
D - 30780

There is also a maker stamp on the round leather end of the cover: BOYT / - 42 -, indicating 1942 manufacture by the well-known Boyt Harness Company of Des Moines, Iowa. This company also made Scabbards for the Browning Automatic Rifle, Slings, pistol holsters, and a multitude of other leather goods during WWII. There is also an MRT stamp on the inside, indicating that the cover was prepared for tropical service by application of "Mildew Resistant Treatment."

Condition of the cover is nice, and it was most likely never used in service. However it has suffered storage wear and staining from the leather components, which have left bright green stains in places, as well as a musty smell, typical of surplus. The buckles and snaps all work correctly, however the carry strap is missing.  Measures approximately 38-1/2" long x 6" wide.

The perfect accessory for your M1917A1 Browning machine gun!

More on Boyt Harness:

The Boyt Harness Company was founded in 1901, in Des Moines, Iowa, to manufacture leather saddles and harnesses, and quickly became known as the regional leader in quality products for the farmer and stockman. As word spread of the pride and craftsmanship with which Boyt products were made, the company was soon the standard bearer for leather products nationwide.

Boyt expanded its line of leather products for the first time during World War I, when it contracted with the United States Government to supply leather goods to the American forces fighting overseas. These initial military contracts included Boyt's first production run of gun cases, holsters, and rifle slings. At the start of World War II, the Boyt Harness Company again contracted with the U.S. Government to design and manufacture high quality military equipment including Jeep scabbards, holsters, ammo belts, and paratrooper carbine cases. The production of wartime leather products made Boyt one of the largest employers in Iowa.
