Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-Kind. This is a very nice original U.S. Army officer’s uniform jacket worn by an Infantry Major serving with the 101st Airborne Division during WWII. The jacket does not have a Parachutist Badge, suggesting that the officer served with the division but may not have been trained or qualified as a paratrooper.

The left shoulder bears a very scarce white tongue variation of the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagle” patch with its matching AIRBORNE tab. The interior has a name tag identifying the jacket to Herbert Wn Thompson and is dated 3/5/43. The jacket was tailored by Smith-Gray of New York.

The uniform retains its U.S. and Infantry officer’s collar insignia, along with Major’s oak leaf rank insignia on both shoulder loops. The left breast pocket carries a STERLING marked Combat Infantryman Badge. Above the pocket is a seven place ribbon bar representing the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, and WWII Victory Medal.

The jacket is in good overall condition but is missing three of its front closure buttons. No additional identifying markings were found inside.

We were unable to positively identify Herbert Wn Thompson through the records available to us. It is possible that the middle initials were intended to read Wm, a traditional abbreviation for William, rather than Wn. However, we were also unable to locate a conclusive match under the name Herbert William Thompson. The exact reading of the name and the officer’s complete service history therefore remain unconfirmed.

With its scarce white tongue 101st Airborne patch, Infantry insignia, Major’s rank, Combat Infantryman Badge, extensive ribbon bar, and dated named tailor label, this is a particularly interesting WWII officer’s uniform with excellent potential for additional research.
