This is a very nice original U.S. WWI wooden trench periscope, retaining much of its original olive-drab painted finish together with its adjustable support arm and metal belt hook. Compact observation devices such as this allowed soldiers to observe enemy positions and battlefield activity while remaining below the protective edge of a trench or other covered position.

The body is constructed principally from wood and retains a substantial amount of its original olive-drab green paint. There is considerably heavier finish loss along the adjustable support arm, together with expected scratches, edge wear, and small areas of chipping to the wooden housing.

The periscope appears to be in great condition, with the mirrors exhibiting great shape, albeit with some light scratches, dust and dirt accumulation. The wooden housing has some expected wear and chipping to the wood itself and the paint, indicating that it is an item of significant age that saw solid field use. The length of the periscope measures just above 14 inches.

Trench periscopes became an important observation tool during World War I because exposing the head above a parapet could invite immediate rifle, machine-gun, or sniper fire. A periscope allowed a soldier to examine the ground ahead while remaining behind cover.

The basic principle was employed in numerous forms by the armies of the First World War. Some trench periscopes were simple wooden mirror boxes such as this example, while others incorporated folding bodies, protective shutters, lenses, or fittings that allowed binoculars to be used with the instrument. The Smithsonian Institution preserves a 1917 trench periscope consisting of wood, metal, and glass with opposing mirrors and protective shutters, illustrating the broader variety of observation equipment developed for trench warfare.

This example shows convincing service and age wear throughout. Much of the olive-drab finish remains on the wooden body, while the adjustable arm shows substantially greater paint loss. The wood has scattered chips and abrasions, and the optical surfaces show the expected dust and minor scratching accumulated over more than a century.

At just over 14 inches long, the periscope remains a compact and unusually complete piece of American WWI field equipment. The survival of its wooden housing, opposing mirrors, olive-drab finish, adjustable support arm, and metal belt hook provides a particularly clear representation of the simple observation devices used to reduce a soldier's exposure while watching the battlefield from a protected position.
