This is an incredible, Patriotic propaganda type poster from WWI, promoting the sales of War Savings Stamps. “Keep Him Free” was one of many posters issued by the U.S. government during World War I to encourage people to buy War Savings Stamps (W.S.S.). W.S.S. could be purchased for 25 cents and, when enough were accumulated, they could be traded in for war bonds. This poster was issued by the United States Treasury Department in 1917. The artist, Charles Livingston Bull, studied taxidermy and was known for his incredible, lifelike illustrations of wildlife. The eagle in this poster standing above aircraft aimed to evoke a sense of patriotism and American superiority.
The poster is in wonderful condition thanks in part due to the linen-backing, which preserves it for decades to come. The fold markings are still present from being shipped to where it was hung, and there is some bending and light tearing in spots. A perfect framing opportunity.
