Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. The 5th Regiment (USMC) is one of the most battle torn American regiments of the First World War, being one of only two Marine regiments to see combat in France. This is a very interesting and unique table medal which was awarded to the USMC 5th Regiment in 1918 for the Inter-Company Basketball Championship.
The medal itself measures 2⅝ x 4¼” and depicts a heavenly gladiator rushing forward over PRO PATRIA meaning For One’s Country. The medal is engraved below that:
INTER-COMPANY
BASKETBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP
USMC 5TH REGIMENT
2ND DIVISION
A.E.F. FRANCE
1918
The back of the medal is stamped HUMIERE ET CIE GREBER, the maker of the medal. The case is unfortunately broken with the lid having broken away from the hinges, measuring 4 x 5¾ x 1” when closed. The lid is maker marked:
SPAULING & CO.
JEWELERS
PARIS
There isn’t much information about the event itself, which makes this a very scarce piece likely awarded for a championship taking place in either November or December 1918 after the end of the war. This is a truly unique piece of WWI Marine history, one you won’t ever find another of.
