  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a rare example of an original U.S. Marine Corps M1917 "Doughboy" helmet shell, and is one of only a few that we had had, as they are very hard to come by. The helmet features a large painted EGA (Eagle, Globe, Anchor) insignia in red with a blue border. The helmet has a full liner and chinstrap.

The helmet is in good overall shape with most of its exterior paint remaining. The painted EGA is in fantastic shape with almost none of the paint lost. There’s a good bit of rust spotting on the brim underneath the helmet, but the helmet’s liner and chinstrap are still in great shape with fully pliability on the chinstrap. The liner is sized 7¼ on the interior chinstrap. The shell is stamped ZC221 which indicates that this is a U.S. produced shell, which is further indicated by the solid rivets used to retain the chin strap bales.

This is a very unique USMC painted helmet, likely done by a marine of the 5th Brigade while with the Army of Occupation in 1919. A very nice WWI Marine Corps helmet. Don’t miss it!

The M1917 was the US Army's first modern combat helmet, used from 1917 and during the 1920s, before being replaced by the M1917A1. The M1917A1 helmet was an updated version of the M1917 and initially used refurbished WW1 shells.

The M1917 is a near identical version of the British Mk.I steel helmet, and it is important to note that when the US joined the Great War in 1917 they were initially issued with a supply of around 400,000 British made Mk.Is, before our own production began stateside. The US-Made M1917s differed slightly in its lining detail, and exhibited US manufacture markings.
