  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is the framed U.S.M.C. War Service Certificate of Private Albert Wymond Newlove, who enlisted in the Marine Corps on February 14th, 1918. Newlove would spend a total of 14 months overseas with the 2nd Division in France & Germany, seeing combat in several major battles and suffering from Influenza.

This is a rare framed example of the war service certificate every member of the Marine Corps would be issued following the end of their wartime enlistment. This example is in its original frame and is in stellar condition, having been cared for for decades following the war. The frame has some chipping on the top, bottom, and sides, but still displays beautifully. The frame measures 11½ x 19”. The certificate names Newlove, lists his enlistment date, February 14, 1918, and his discharge date, August 20, 1919, as well as his organizations & locations during his service, Mare Island, California, Quantico, Va, and 4th Bdge. 2nd Div. A.E.F. France, which is the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in France.

Albert Wyman Newlove was born on November 23rd, 1894, in Los Alamos, California. Upon registering for the draft, he was employed as a farmer, and did attempt to use this as a reason for exemption. Realizing this would not suffice, Newlove opted to join the Marine Corps, enlisting at Mare Island, California. He would be sent to Quantico for training before being sent overseas with a replacement battalion in June 1918.

Being assigned to the 17th Company, 5th Regiment, Newlove saw combat during the final days of Chateau-Thierry until July 16th, 1918, the Aisne-Marne Offensive from July 18-20th, 1918, the St. Mihiel Offensive from September 12-16th, 1918, and part of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive from September 29th-November 11th, 1918. In late September, Newlove reported to the hospital with a case of Influenza, which had been spreading rapidly across troops in France. He spent several weeks in the hospital before returning to his new company, the Supply Company, 5th Regiment, for the final 2 days of the Meuse-Argonne. After the Armistice was signed on November 11th, 1918, Newlove was transferred between several companies of the 5th Regiment before ending his service overseas with the 8th Machine Gun Company, 5th Regiment, in August 1919. He’d travel back stateside and was made inactive in the Marine Corps on August 20th, 1919. A few months later he continued his service, serving with the Western Reserve Division, remaining here until his final discharge in December 1921.

We have conducted much research on Newlove, but there is certainly still more to be found. This is a fantastic example of a war service document, framed and ready to mount. Don’t miss it!
