Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is an absolutely stellar example of one of the most sought after pieces of First World War Marine Corps headgear, the Forest Green “fold-down” overseas cap, which was modeled after the famous British Glengarry or Forage style cap which features two small buttons on the front that, when undone, would allow pieces of the cap to wrap around the soldier’s ears. This style of cap became popular among American soldiers who would either remove the British buttons and replace them with American eagle buttons, or purchase a custom example with unique insignia. Many period photos of Marines stationed in Germany with the Army of Occupation feature this hat, occasionally with company numerals on the opposite side.
This phenomenal cap is a French made example, modeled after the British forage caps, in a beautiful forest green wool, and affixed with two small Marine Corps buttons on the front. There is a hook on both sides that secures the side flaps to the hat until the buttons are undone and these flaps unfold. The soldier has affixed an EGA (Eagle, Globe, Anchor) insignia on the left side as shown, which has been secured by a screw and washer to keep it secure. The insignia has torn a small hole in the interior liner fabric, and this combined with the rusting around the edges confirms this insignia to have remained in place since the soldier wore it overseas. There are a few scattered moth nips across the cap as shown. The cap measures about 11⅞” long, and is roughly size 7 ⅛.
This is a truly untouched example of a fiercely sought after cap. Don’t miss it!
