Original Item: Only One Available. This is an outstanding original U.S. WWI Treasury Department propaganda poster encouraging Americans to support the war effort through the purchase of War Savings Stamps.
Designed by Casper Emerson Jr., the poster features one of the more memorable American home front images of the period. A belt of War Savings Stamps is depicted as ammunition feeding directly into a soldier’s machine gun, visually connecting financial support on the home front with the troops fighting overseas.
The poster carries the message:
HELP THEM KEEP YOUR WAR SAVINGS PLEDGE
The United States relied heavily on public financing during WWI, encouraging civilians to purchase Liberty Bonds, Victory Loans, and War Savings Stamps. Posters such as this were created to persuade Americans that even relatively small individual financial contributions played a direct role in supporting the military effort.
The poster measures approximately:
20 x 30 inches
Condition is good overall. There are several tears along the bottom and side edges, along with scattered heavy fold marks from storage. Despite this wear, the artwork remains strong and highly displayable.
The design is particularly effective because it transforms War Savings Stamps into a belt of ammunition, giving the viewer an immediate visual connection between buying stamps at home and supplying soldiers at the front.
During WWI, posters became one of the most important forms of mass communication. Governments on both sides of the conflict used them to recruit soldiers, raise money, conserve food and materials, encourage industrial production, and strengthen civilian morale.
American propaganda posters were produced in enormous numbers after the United States entered the war in 1917. Many of the most successful designs relied on bold imagery and short, direct messages that could be understood almost instantly.
War Savings Stamps were intended to make participation in wartime financing accessible to a much broader portion of the population than traditional government bonds. Civilians could purchase stamps in smaller denominations and gradually accumulate them toward larger savings certificates.
This is a particularly attractive example of U.S. WWI home front propaganda, combining strong graphic imagery, a direct Treasury Department financial appeal, and a visually dramatic connection between civilian savings and military firepower. It would display extremely well framed and makes an excellent addition to a WWI propaganda or American home front collection.
