Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is an exceptional group of WWI tank-related insignia and awards attributed to an American enlisted tanker who served with the American Expeditionary Forces. The group is highlighted by a scarce British-style bullion tank badge and a rare U.S. Senior Master Tank Mechanic rank insignia, together with a U.S. WWI Victory Medal and Sharpshooter badge.
The most visually distinctive piece is a very scarce British bullion tank badge depicting the early rhomboid “Landship” tank. It is embroidered in bullion on a black felt backing and remains in excellent condition with no significant loss to the bullion work.
The lot includes:
- Very rare British bullion Landship tank qualification badge on black felt backing, great condition without loss to bullion. Worn by American tankers qualified in British Mark V tanks.
- U.S. Senior Master Tank Mechanic rank badge depicting British Landship tank over laurels with a star over the tank, indicated Senior. As there are no chevrons it would be for tank mechanic. Minor mothing.
- U.S. WWI Victory medal with France bar, issued to the majority of tankers in the AEF.
- U.S. Sharpshooter proficiency badge. Heavy wear across.
The U.S. Tank Corps was still a new branch during WWI, and American armored forces relied heavily on Allied experience and equipment while developing their own doctrine. U.S. units operated both French Renault FT light tanks and British heavy tanks during the final campaigns of 1918, making surviving American Tank Corps insignia from the period considerably scarcer than insignia from the traditional infantry, artillery, and cavalry branches.
The combination of the British bullion Landship tank badge, rare Senior Master Tank Mechanic insignia, WWI Victory Medal with FRANCE clasp, and heavily worn Sharpshooter badge makes this an unusually strong group of early American armored-force material. The specialized tank insignia are the defining pieces of the lot and provide an excellent visual record of the brief but historically important development of the U.S. Tank Corps during the First World War.
