Original U.S. WWI No. 1005 USN Engineer Bolo Machete with Wood Handle & Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic U.S. Army issue Spanish American War and WWI issue Collins type Model No 1005 Machete, with a lovely handle and embossed leather scabbard.

The machete features a heavy steel, 15 inch curved blade with grips secured with four brass rivets, though one appears to be replaced. The handle itself does show signs of heavy use as well as more modern repairs. The blade surface is very smooth, showing typical age staining, with minor pitting and no extensive damage. The original Collins markings are no longer visible on the blade.

Collins made these from the Spanish American War until shortly after WWl. They were issued with smooth leather scabbards, as well as tooled leather like this example. It does not have the COLLINS & CO LEGITIMUS logo embossed into the leather, with brass fittings on both ends. The end of the chape is open, which is completely correct, and allows moisture and sap to drip out the bottom. The belt loop is still intact with some wear present.

In general these Machetes were not US marked. Some of the earliest ones exhibit a Green Horn handle opposed to wood. The horn had a greenish color and tended to be susceptible to insects/worms.

Collins records (from Collins Machetes and Bowies 1845-1965 by D.E. Henry) show that this machete was ordered by the Ordnance Department to their specifications in February 1913 as order #1889 (which may have been interpreted as a date instead of an order number).

This example is in good condition, and would make a great addition to any edged weapon collection.
