Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic U.S. Navy issue Spanish American War and WWI issue “Collins” Model No 1005 Machete, with wood handle and embossed leather scabbard.
The machete features a heavy steel, 15 inch curved blade with grips secured with three brass rivets. The blade surface is very smooth, showing typical age staining, but no pitting or damage. The original Collins markings are not present on this example.
Collins made these from the Spanish American War until shortly after WWl. They were issued with smooth leather scabbards, as well as tooled leather like this example. It does not have the Collins logo embossed into the leather and is equipped with brass fittings on both ends. The end of the chape is open, which is completely correct, and allows moisture and sap to drip out the bottom. The belt loop is no longer intact and is completely missing.
In general these Machetes were not US marked. Some of the earlier ones exhibit a Green Horn handle opposed to wood. The horn had a greenish color and tended to be susceptible to insects/worms.
Collins records (from Collins Machetes and Bowies 1845-1965 by D.E. Henry) show that this machete was ordered by the Ordnance Department to their specifications in February 1913 as order #1889 (which may have been interpreted as a date instead of an order number).
This example is in very good condition, and would make a great addition to any edged weapon collection.
