Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a great service-worn M1910 Mess Kit set with the original spoon, fork, and knife, named to Ralph Moorhouse, who went overseas with the 604th Engineer Sapper Regiment, seeing combat in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive before being transferred to the 29th Engineer Regiment, which was the Surveying & Printing Regiment. The mess kit is well decorated.
The mess kit is dated 1917 and maker-marked on the handle to T.U.S.A. The lid of the mess kit reads
Ralph Moorhouse
Co. F 604 Eng
2d Bat.
Hallie And Morey
There is an engraving of a leaf on a branch and a bust of a woman below that.
The bowl of the mess kit is engraved on the sides MOREY - FRANCE - 1918-1919 FEB 28. This date refers to his trip back to the United States on February 28th, 1919. The bottom of the bowl is engraved with many of the places he had been in France, including Nantes, Dijon, Tours, Nansemond, Bordeaux, 95-Sur-Tille, and 59 Boaque Ave in Paris. The utensils are all in fair shape but the spoon has some scratches on the surface. All three utensils are dated 1917 and marked U.S. There is also a printed photo of Moorhouse’s grave inside the mess kit.
The mess kit has a few flaws, including missing the pull ring on the lid, and some burn marks on the sides. Otherwise it is in great service used condition.
This is a very nice engraved mess kit to a Combat Engineer who fought in the Bloodiest Offensive in American History. Comes ready for further research and display.
