This is an original U.S. WWI M1917 pattern pistol lanyard, a classic item of American sidearm equipment introduced during the First World War and well suited for display with a Model 1911 .45 automatic pistol or contemporary U.S. service revolver. Constructed from braided khaki-colored cord with metal hardware, this example shows honest service wear and retains the important early marking PAT. FEB-20-17 on the clasp.

The M1917 pattern represented an improvement over the earlier M1905 pistol lanyard, which had originally been developed around U.S. service revolvers. The later pattern was better adapted to the Model 1911 automatic pistol, which had been adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911, while the same general lanyard could also accompany other military sidearms fitted with suitable lanyard loops. Collector and reproduction references consistently identify this configuration as the M1917 Pistol Lanyard and associate it with both the M1911 and M1917 revolvers.
