Original U.S. WWI Model 1909 Bolo Knife by Plumb Philadelphia with Scabbard - Dated 1917

Original Item: Only One Available: The M-1909 Bolo Knife was designed to aid US soldiers with jungle foliage that they found themselves in with incursions into Cuba and the Philippines, where natives used similar sized machetes.
It was designed to be carried as a belt knife from its first production at the Springfield Armory in 1909 to its final production in 1915. Only 17,540 were produced at the Springfield Armory, making originals rare on the collector's market today.
The M-1909 features a 13 1/2" heavy straight back blade, with a curved cutting edge with a big belly near the tip. The heavy ended blade made these very effective for clearing brush and jungle debris, as well as making them excellent hand weapons in close combat. The edge is single beveled, which helps with strength and ease of sharpening.
This example is absolutely fantastic, the best we have ever seen, with very little wear to the blade or scabbard. The wooden handle has a beautiful color, and is free from any major defects, with the brass rivets still secure. The blade is marked near the cross guard with PLUMB / PHILA / FLAMING BOMB / 1917 on one side, and U.S. / 55790 on the reverse. This is the latest dated example we’ve seen.
The original leather scabbard is in great condition, and is marked by the maker on the reverse, however we can only make out the date and inspector, 1918 / P.F.G..
A very scarce edged weapon dating back to before WW1, replaced by the 1917 Bolo Knife introduced in WW1, which resulted in the Model of 1909 becoming very hard to find today. Ready to display.
