Original U.S. WWI Medal, Photo and Document Grouping For Sergeant Joseph Wasiewicz, Machine Gun Co., 112 Infantry

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Grouping Available. Now this is a lovely little grouping attributed to Joseph F. Wasiewicz, a Sergeant with the 28th Infantry Division, 112th Infantry Regiment, Machine Gun Company. According to the documents in the grouping, he continued service after WWI well into the 1920s with a few different elements of the New York National Guard. We have not been able to find detailed information regarding his service, but we were able to read the often illegible “Battles, engagements, skirmishes, expeditions” part of one of his discharge papers.

He served in the following:
- Meuse-Argonne
- Belleau Wood
- St. Mihiel Salient

He also put the dates he was issued the clasps for his victory medal. The victory medal also has a Aisne-Marne clasp and Defensive Sector clasp. One of the documents included is a photocopy of a letter written by his former CO dated April 29, 1933.

The letter is as follows:

“ To whom it may concern;
This is to certify that Joseph F. Wasiewicz was a member of the Machine Gun Company, 112 Inf, 28 Div. He was gassed in France and taken to Base Hospital No. 54 and returned to the United States on the USS Tiger. Anything that can be done for him will be appreciated.

Respectfully, E. L. Rhone
Formerly Captain M.G. Co. 112 Inf.”

We believe the letter to be for medical treatments as a result of being gassed during the war. We have not been able to locate any information on what happened exactly, making for a wonderful research opportunity.

The Other Items In This Grouping:
- x8 Photographs/Newspaper Clippings: It’s always nice to place a face to a name and these are great examples of that. The images are a little worn but they are still mostly discernible with text that is able to be read.

- 10” x 10” VFW Recognition of Service Plaque: The plaque is for dedicated service to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

- 5 ¾” x 4” Framed 1974 VFW Membership Card: The membership is for Post 1897, the Casimir Pulaski Post in Buffalo, New York.

- x10 Medals/Ribbons:

- x2 Ribbon Bars: The ribbons are plastic covered like the Wolf Brown ribbons but were made by G. W. Studley of Avon, New York. All ribbons match the following medals:

- WWI Victory Medal With 4 Clasps
- 1914–1918 Croix de Guerre With (1) Palm
- Mexican Border Service With Separate Additional Ribbon
- Verdun Medal
- New York State Mexican Border Service
- New York State WWI Service Medal

This is a wonderful grouping and it comes more than ready for further research and display.
