Original Item: Only One Available. This is a scarce original U.S. Marine Corps Model 1912 dismounted leather holster for the Colt Model 1911 .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol. The holster was modified during its period of use by removing the original long drop hanger and replacing it with a custom leather belt loop.
The Model 1912 holster was developed for the recently adopted Colt Model 1911 service pistol. The standard mounted version featured an extended leather hanger and a swivel mechanism that allowed the holster to remain secured to the wearer’s thigh while mounted. A less common dismounted version was also produced without the swivel mechanism but retained an extended leather hanger and wire belt hook.
This example began as the dismounted “long drop” variation. Its original extended hanger and wire belt hook were completely removed, and a simple leather belt loop was installed directly on the reverse of the holster. The replacement loop is secured with three rivets that now display considerable verdigris. The modification appears old and consistent with the holster’s period of use, possibly having been performed to make it compatible with a particular Marine’s preferred belt or equipment arrangement. The exact date and circumstances of the alteration are unknown.
The front flap is prominently embossed with:
U S M C
The letters are enclosed within an oval, identifying the holster as Marine Corps property. USMC marked Model 1912 holsters are considerably more difficult to locate than the standard Army examples marked simply U.S.
The holster remains in good service used condition. The original leg tie down is no longer present, although the attachment slots remain visible. The modified belt loop remains firmly attached, and the verdigris around its rivets contributes to the holster’s untouched appearance.
The Model 1912 remained in Marine Corps use during WWI even after the simpler Model 1916 holster entered service. Period photographs and surviving equipment indicate that Marines used both mounted and dismounted Model 1912 holsters, with some prewar officers retaining the swivel variation while other officers and senior noncommissioned officers used the long drop dismounted pattern. An Official Journal Of The NRA
This is a particularly interesting USMC marked Model 1912 holster with a substantial period alteration reflecting its continued practical use. Its scarce Marine Corps property marking, early dismounted configuration, and custom riveted belt loop distinguish it from the more commonly encountered Army and Model 1916 holsters.
