  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice WWI U.S. Marine Corps recruiting poster measuring 21" × 27 ¾", which features a portrait of Admiral George Dewey, next to the following quotation:

    "No finer
    military organi-
    zation than the
    Marine Corps
    exists in the
    world."

    George Dewey
    ADMIRAL OF THE NAVY.

Surrounding this is the following clear message:

    HE DID HIS DUTY
    (Dewey Portrait and quote)

We have seen a variety of different addresses on these posters, so they were printed and then posted local to the recruiting office. There is a small PW logo at the bottom right corner, and no other type of markings indicating either the artist or publisher.

While the black print is still vibrant, the poster has definitely deteriorated over the years. It is in somewhat delicate condition, especially the fold lines, as it looks to have been unfolded and refolded numerous times, and sometimes in different directions, which has really made those areas delicate. There is also some discoloration of the paper, possibly due to water exposure, and tearing along the edges. This poster definitely should be handled with care.

A lovely example more than ready to be mounted in a frame!
