Original U.S. WWI Marine Corps Belleau Wood “Trench Art” Handmade Fife Musical Instrument Named to T. M. Hill U.S.M.C. 1917-18

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous handmade wooden fife (as in “Musket, Fife, and Drum”) from World War I with a spectacular inscription attributing it to Belleau Wood, the most prolific battle in Marine Corps history. The fife measures 21 ⅜” long and is very crudely constructed.

The fife is inscribed:

T.M. HILL U.S.M.C. BELLEAU WOOD 1917-18

In our research we have been unable to find an exact match for T.M. Hill, with the closest matches being Theodore Boyd Hill, a Corporal in the 75th Company, 6th Regiment, who died of wounds received in action on October 8th, 1918, and Thomas J. Hill, a Trumpeter in the Headquarters Company, 5th Regiment, who was wounded severely in Belleau Wood on June 12th, 1918. We are more inclined to believe that Thomas J. Hill is the correct identification, but of this we cannot be certain. This is a piece worthy of more research than we are able to provide! It is certainly period, and has a spectacular patina.

This is one of the most gorgeous instruments we have ever offered, and comes ready for further research and display!
