Original U.S. WWI Map Reading Leg Board Identified to Marine Corps Officer Henry P Torrey - Died of Influenza En Route to France

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting piece of equipment, a map reading leg board which is missing the ruler pieces that complete it. Of interest however is the name carved into the back, Lt. H. P. Torrey / USMC, for Henry Pierce Torrey, who was first appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on February 16th, 1913 with the advice and consent of the Senate. Over the next 5 years he would hold multiple positions, serving in Haiti, China, the Dominican Republic, and several stateside locations, attaining the rank of Captain by 1917.

Torrey was en route overseas to France with the 13th Regiment, and was promoted to the rank of Major on September 12th, 1918. But 12 days later, on September 24th, he died of Influenza in the ship’s hospital, his body kept aboard for return to the U.S..

The board measures 9 x 10½” and has a rope for mounting to the wall. As mentioned, it is missing pieces integral for its actual use, but the displayability of this piece is in its identification. A very interesting piece, ready for further research and display.
