Original Item. Only One Available. This is a good, service worn original U.S. WWI M1917 Medical Officer’s Belt manufactured by Mills and dated December 1917. Designed to keep a medical officer’s instruments and essential supplies accessible at the front of the body, the belt retains its four pocket arrangement, adjustable rear connection, and repeated Mills markings. One snap on a smaller pocket is broken, while the remaining snaps and the main belt closure continue to function.

The M1917 Medical Officer’s Belt was adopted during WWI as a specialized carrier for the instruments and supplies used by Army medical officers while treating wounded personnel. Its arrangement allowed the contents to remain readily accessible while leaving the wearer’s hands free to examine and assist casualties.

The belt consists of two large pockets and two smaller pockets, with one large and one small pocket positioned together on each side of the front. The two sections are joined by an adjustable belt at the rear.

The larger pockets were intended to carry medical cases and instruments required by the officer. Bandages and many of the more routine first aid supplies were generally carried in the separate enlisted medical belt rather than in the officer’s equipment.

The central belt section and the areas beneath both large pocket flaps bear the following date and manufacturer marking:

The repeated markings identify the belt as Mills production completed in December 1917. The belt shows extensive service wear consistent with field use and prolonged storage. The web material remains intact, with age toning, staining, and wear visible throughout.

One of the snaps on a smaller pocket has broken away from its functioning position. The detached portion remains attached to the flap, allowing the pocket to retain its outward appearance for display, although the snap no longer secures the pocket as intended.

All of the other snaps remain functional. The principal belt closure also continues to operate correctly.

The Mills Woven Cartridge Belt Company was a major American producer of woven military equipment. Its manufacturing methods allowed ammunition belts, medical belts, and other carriers to be produced from tightly woven webbing with integrated pocket structures, reducing the amount of separate stitching and assembly required.

The surviving four pocket configuration, repeated DEC 1917 Mills markings, adjustable belt section, and largely functional hardware identify this as a representative example of the specialized equipment carried by U.S. Army medical officers during WWI. The broken smaller pocket snap and general service wear are important condition considerations, but the belt remains substantially complete and would be appropriate for a collection focused on the Army Medical Department, American Expeditionary Forces equipment, or WWI battlefield medicine.
