Original items: Only One Available. This is a great example of the rare and hard to find U.S. M1917 Enfield bayonet, in good condition. It comes complete with its original issue leather scabbard, which is in good but worn condition. This example retains the rare first pattern scabbard hanger.
The M1917 bayonet was originally designed to be used with the US M1917 Enfield .30 caliber rifle, as well as with the seven different U.S. trench shotguns. The blade is 17 inches (43.18 cm) long. The M1917 Enfield was the U.S. Version of the British P-14 rifle, and the bayonets used are identical, down to the double groove in the grips, used to differentiate the bayonets from the P-1907 for the SMLE rifle.
This bayonet is in good condition, and is marked on the blade ricasso with date 1917 over the round REMINGTON logo. The reverse ricasso is marked with the ordnance "Flaming Bomb" over U.S., next to an Eagle's Head / 8 proof mark. The blade is great, without much oxidation or discoloration as shown, and was sharpened at arsenal once or twice. The edge does not have any nicks or damage, and the ricasso still has the original bluing. The handle finish is in good shape, and the wood of the grip is a bit service worn. The grip scales are excellent, with a great color.
The scarce first pattern Maxim scabbard is in fair shape overall. The fittings are still the correct blued steel now oxidized, with an OD green finished leather body. The throat is heavily dented as shown and the leather is now a bit crazed and loose. It does have heavy wear from service, but it presents fine. There is an inspector’s stamp, M.S. on the scabbard. The Maxim patent device is dated 1917 by JEWELL, and is also very crazed and a bit weak.
A great chance to pick up a rare bayonet with its original scabbard. Ready to display!
