  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a U.S. M1917 "Doughboy" helmet, which features original period textured OD Green paint. The shell is maker-marked with a stamping on the underside of the rim that reads ZD / 24. The solid rivets and heat lot number indicate that this helmet shell was produced in the United States. The paint is in very good condition both inside and outside the helmet. The liner is unfortunately detached but is still included with the helmet.

The best feature of this helmet is definitely the original hand painted 4th Division - “The Ivy Division” emblem in the center of the diamond. The Division Insignia maintains most of the original paint and remains bold and easy to see. The 4th Division saw heavy combat on the Western Front in The Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne Offensives.

The helmet retains the leather and oilcloth liner though it shows heavy wear and has completely detached from the helmet.

The combination of the U.S.-made M1917 shell, ZD / 24 marking, original textured OD finish, surviving hand-painted 4th Division insignia, and retained original liner assembly makes this a strong representative helmet from one of the American divisions that saw heavy combat in France. The detached liner is the principal condition issue, while the painted Ivy Division insignia remains the most important visual and historical feature of the piece.
