This is a very nice original American made 75mm artillery round from the First World War, complete with its projectile, Model 1907M fuze, and brass casing manufactured by Scovill. Standing approximately 24 1/4” tall, the assembled round has good displayability and retains clearly legible period markings on both the fuze and the base of the casing.

This item is completely inert and in total compliance per the current BATF rules governing inert ordnance. The projectile has three holes drilled into its side and contains no explosive material. Not Available For Export.

The round is in good overall condition with a well established patina of age. The brass casing appears to have been extensively polished recently, which has produced a brighter surface than might otherwise be expected on an example of this age. Parts of the fuze exhibit oxidation. The projectile is now fixed within the casing and can no longer be removed.

The Scovill marking identifies the casing with one of the major American industrial manufacturers involved in wartime ammunition production. Together with the dated Model 1907M fuze markings and the casing headstamp, these details provide important evidence of the round’s American manufacture and First World War period.

The 75mm field gun was among the most important artillery weapons employed by the American Expeditionary Forces in France. The United States adopted the French Canon de 75 modèle 1897 as the 75mm Gun M1897, a weapon noted for its rapid rate of fire and hydropneumatic recoil system. This mechanism allowed the barrel to recoil and return to position without requiring the crew to relay the entire gun after each shot, giving the French 75 a considerable practical advantage over many earlier field pieces.

By November 1918, approximately 480 American 75mm field gun batteries, comprising more than 1,900 guns, were serving on the battlefields of France. American manufacture of the French design began during the spring of 1918 and expanded rapidly. Willys-Overland produced carriages, Singer Manufacturing Company and Rock Island Arsenal manufactured hydropneumatic recuperators, and gun components were produced by firms including Symington-Anderson and the Wisconsin Gun Company. American industry completed approximately 1,050 guns during the First World War, although only 143 had reportedly reached France by the Armistice on November 11, 1918. Consequently, most American batteries that saw action used French manufactured guns.

The complete assembled form, approximately 24 1/4” height, Model 1907M fuze, and clearly marked Scovill casing make this a representative example of the ammunition associated with the American 75mm field artillery system. Although the casing has been polished and the fuze shows oxidation, the surviving markings remain an important part of the round’s historical and collector interest. It would fit particularly well in a collection devoted to American Expeditionary Forces equipment, First World War artillery, military ammunition development, or American wartime industrial production.
