  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendously unique souvenir plate made for Supply Sergeant John W. Long, Headquarters Company, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. Long was from Newman, Georgia. Long first enlisted in the Regular Army on July 5th, 1913, serving in several field artillery regiments until being assigned to the 6th Field Artillery, going overseas on November 12th, 1917. Long would see every bit of combat with the 1st Division, including Montdidier-Noyon; Aisne-Marne; St. Mihiel; Meuse-Argonne; Lorraine 1917; Lorraine 1918; Picardy 1918. Long would remain in the 6th Field Artillery into the 1930s, still being on the roster in November 1930.

The plate measures 10½” in diameter, and the rim is covered in wreaths. It depicts a set of crossed cannons with an American Eagle & Shield above it, with the 1st Division insignia to the left and the 3rd Army to the right. The plate reads:

    AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES
    1917 14 AUG. FRANCE / GERMANY DEC. 11918
    6 FA HQ.
    SGT. JOHN W. LONG

This is an absolutely gorgeous souvenir piece for the 1st Division, which was the first American division to arrive in France during World War I. The plate is in great shape overall with some chips in the finish, but still retains its original hanging wire on the back to be mounted on the wall. The plate appears to have been broken in half at one point & was carefully glued back together. It still displays very well and it’s barely noticeable that it was broken. This will add some much-needed color & flair to any AEF Collection. Comes ready for further research and display.
