Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendously unique souvenir plate made for Sergeant 1st Class Henry A. Guertin, Co. C, 1st Engineers. Guertin joined the 1st Engineers on August 21st, 1915, and was a sergeant when the regiment was called to France. Guertin went overseas and spent 2 years in France, from August 1917-1919, going through every major offensive and being promoted to Sergeant 1st Class. Guertin would remain in the Army, and specifically the 1st Engineers, until 1939, being stationed in the Philippines, Hawaii, among other places.
The plate measures 9½” in diameter, and is encrusted on the brim with 5 faux pearls/gems. It depicts the U.S. Engineer castle below the 1st Division insignia surrounded by olive branches. Below the castle is a shovel & pickaxe. The plate reads:
CO. C. 1ST U.S. ENGINEERS
SGT. 1CL (SERGEANT 1ST CLASS)
HENRY A. GUERTIN
CANTIGNY ST. MIHIEL
SOISSONS ARGONNE
This is an absolutely gorgeous souvenir piece for the 1st Division, which was the first American division to arrive in France during World War I. The plate is in great shape overall with just a few nicks, but still retains its original hanging wire on the back to be mounted on the wall. The back of the plate has a maker’s mark, J.L.K.. This will add some much-needed color & flair to any AEF Collection. Comes ready for further research and display.
