Original U.S. WWI Fighting Knife Made from Cutdown Krag Bayonet with Lead-Filled Pommel & Enfield Bayonet Scabbard

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting handmade fighting knife likely used during the First World War. The knife consists of a Model 1892 Krag Rifle Bayonet whose blade has been cut down to 6¼”. The bayonet catch was removed, and the entire channel was filled with lead, giving the pommel a heavy weight. The crossguard was entirely cut down, giving the knife a clean profile. The bayonet comes in a cut-down M1917 Enfield bayonet sheath which has been expertly reclosed with stitching and painted over. The lack of a plate on the throat means there is likely a piece missing from the sheath.
The blade has been cut down and sharpened heavily with a small false edge. One side of the ricasso is marked 1901, and the other is marked US. The overall length of the knife is now 10¾”.
The scabbard retains the full belt hook and has been cut down considerably to 6 ¾”. The open leather end was expertly cut, folded over, stitched, and sealed. It is a very clean seal, and the throat has been painted in a yellowish green almost camouflage-like color. The leather appears to have had this paint too, but it is now worn away.
This is a very interesting knife that was almost certainly carried by a doughboy during the First World War.
