Original U.S. WWI Excellent 77th “Liberty” Division Wool M1907 Greatcoat with Wound Stripe - 302nd Field Signal Battalion

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a fantastic research project. This is a great M1907 greatcoat utilized by a Corporal in the 302nd Field Signal Battalion, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces. The coat is enormous and has all period-applied insignia including a wound stripe, which is rare for members of a field signal battalion. These men would have been repairing communication lines under heavy artillery fire, so this man’s wound likely came from that.
The jacket has a great 77th Division patch stitched onto the left shoulder, with two overseas chevrons denoting 12-18 months overseas on the left cuff. The right sleeve has a Signals Corporal rate, with two chevrons and a pair of Signal flags, and one wound stripe on the right cuff. There is no discharge chevron meaning this soldier wore this in France exactly as it is. There is a depot tag on the interior dating the greatcoat to October 1917, which is perfect as the 77th Division left for France in April 1918, meaning this was certainly worn throughout the 77th’s Campaigns.
The 302nd Field Signal Battalion was a relatively small unit, so it would not be impossible to gather a list of Corporals in the battalion and check which ones were wounded. A great research project!
The greatcoat is in fantastic condition with some light mothing on the collar and one button missing, but otherwise it’s perfect. Comes ready for further research and display.
