Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice U.S. WWI Century custom steel Signal cannon, with a graduated steel barrel. While the bore is only about 0.75", these still would give a hearty thump when discharged, perfect for sending short range signals, particularly if used at sea on a small boat. We suspect that this example is not mounted on the original carriage, but was instead placed on it after service. The carriage itself looks to use some WWII Era parts (or possibly later), particularly the hard rubber wheels.
This features a 12" barrel, with the bore being about 3/4 inches, and it has the standard touch hole ignition. The Cannon is mounted on its sturdy carriage with hard rubber wheels, and looks to have used industrial parts on hand for construction. There are no markings on the cannon or carriage, so both were most likely custom made at some foundry during the late 19th century. The cannon and carriage together way about 11.5lbs. At present there is no range or elevation control, with the barrel resting on a bolt rising from the bottom of the carriage.
Today these are mostly used to start yacht races, but during the 18th and 19th centuries were a necessary part of Naval Warfare. An extremely attractive example in great shape, ready to put by the fireplace!
