Original U.S. WWI Drawn Art 302nd Infantry Regiment 1918 Leather Mittens

Item Description

Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. This is a set of genuine 1918 Leather Mittens, Specification No. 1319, adopted on April 11, 1918 and in service from April 1918 presumably to 1919 or until supplies were exhausted

- The mitten was developed to be worn over a regulation woolen glove.
- The mitten was cut on a one finger mitten pattern and constructed from horsehide.
- The mitten’s hand portion was lined with either fleece or canton flannel.
- The mitten had a stiff flaring cuff without a wrist strap.

This style of mitten was popular with AEF truck drivers. A truck driver would naturally have patches of down time and this particular driver used that extra time to ink sketch on this set of mittens. One mitten has the image of an American soldier in a campaign hat underneath which it reads Doughboy Co. I 320 INF. FRANCE 1918 H.E.L.

The left hand mitten has a sketch of a woman with hat and reads The Girl Behind Co. I 320 INF. FRANCE 1918 H.E.L.

Both mittens are offered in very good condition.

A really interesting and yes catching set of trench art gloves or gauntlets, perfect for any AEF collection!
