  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is an outstanding WWI uniform and field gear grouping for an aviator in the Air Service, Signal Corps, U.S. Army. Most items belonged to Lieutenant John M. Pettingell, who arrived overseas in September 1918 and did not see any combat though he underwent intensive training overseas. The musette bag in the group is named to Pettingell but also to “C.R. Oberst, 1st Lieut., Air Service”, this being Claire R. Oberst who downed one German plane while serving with the 20th Aero Squadron! This is an excellent grouping with some very rare pieces.

    The items include:
    - French-made Musette bag named both to Pettingell and Oberst. One strap hook is broken and is attached with a rope. There are two small leather pouches inside.
    - M1911 Campaign hat with Officer’s cord by Stetson retailed by Scarbrough & Sons of Texas, named to Pettingell on Sweatband.
    - Great rare WWI Victory Medal with Officer’s aviation insignia attached. Great piece.
    - M1912 Officer’s visor cap named J.M. Pettingell / 2nd Lt. A.S.M.A. on interior, great shape.
    - Army Officer’s uniform with bullion sewn 2nd lieutenant bars on shoulders. Tailored by DeLuxe of New York. Not named anywhere. Great shape.
    - American Red cross issued wool sweater, great example. Rare to find.
    - Small “ditty” bag with sewing materials and spoon inside.
    - US Corrected small box respirator in bag, one of the snaps on the bag is broken off. Mask is stiff.
    - British-made Glengarry style overseas cap with faux braided “leather” buttons and lieutenant bar.
    - US Officer’s breeches to match jacket, wool.
    - US Officer’s breeches, cotton.
    - US Officer’s breeches, rare corduroy example.
    - Pair of Puttees.
    - WWI Victory medal, no bar.
    - Two Sam Browne belts.
    - Large unfoldable canvas sheet with straps on all ends.
    - British Mk. I Doughboy helmet with partial liner, no chinstrap. Heavy wear and one bale is field-replaced.
    - Private purchase glasses in tin.
    - Army issue shirt.
    - Small shaving kit.

An excellent group with lots of material and a great story, ready to display.
