Original U.S. WWI Air Service Flying Goggles by Willson with Original Case
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice set of WWI Air Service flying goggles by WIllson, complete with the original case. Willson made a multitude of different goggle designs during the early 20th century, with some being little more than reinforced sunglasses. These however are definitely goggles, designed to strap over the head or a helmet and protect the eyes from wind and debris. Each side is marked WILLSON where the strap attaches, and they feature clear lenses, with perforated surrounds for ventilation.
The included carrying case is marked on the lid:
REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.
Due to the denting on the lid of the case, it is hard to make out these markings. The case does still work well, but definitely saw quite a bit of use, and did a good job of protecting the goggles from catastrophic damage. There is an old paper towel inside the case for padding. The original label insert inside the case is unfortunately missing.
The goggles themselves are in very good condition considering the age, with lenses clear, and the gaskets around the frames mostly intact. The securing strap is however no longer elastic, and somewhat delicate.
A very nice set of goggles from WWI, perfect for any flying display!
