Original U.S. WWI 82nd All American Division Private Purchase Uniform Jacket & Breeches by Hart Schaffner & Marx - Ordnance Sergeant

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original U.S. WWI 82nd Division “All American” private-purchase uniform jacket and matching breeches, tailored by Hart Schaffner & Marx and retailed through The Hub of Baltimore, Maryland. The uniform is configured for an enlisted Ordnance Sergeant and retains an especially attractive woven 82nd Division Liberty Loan-style shoulder insignia, together with Ordnance rank chevrons and two inverted service chevrons on the lower left cuff.
The uniform is privately tailored rather than standard government-issue construction and remains in very good overall condition. An interior label identifies Hart Schaffner & Marx, with the garment associated with The Hub in Baltimore, Maryland. Hart Schaffner & Marx was heavily involved in American clothing production during WWI, with National Archives photographs documenting its tailoring operations producing coats and breeches during the wartime period.
The private purchase uniform itself is in very good condition and exhibits minor wear and scattered moth nips. There is a tag on the interior for Hart Schaffner & Marx, tailored at “The Hub” in Baltimore, Maryland. The left shoulder features a lovely AA “All Americans” insignia. The insignia itself is beautiful and still completely attache, being one of the stateside-made Liberty Loan variants. The chevrons present are two inverted overseas chevrons on the lower left cuff denoting 12-17 months of overseas service, in an interesting silver braid style. There are Ordnance Sergeant chevrons on the right sleeve, and as the uniform is private purchase, there are no holes for Collar discs so none were attached. There is a tag inside but no name we could find. The breeches are in similar condition.
The 82nd Division served overseas during 1918 and participated in the Lorraine, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne operations. Its WWI history produced some of the most enduring traditions of the modern 82nd Airborne Division, including the “All American” designation and double-A shoulder insignia.
This set is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its private-purchase Hart Schaffner & Marx construction, Baltimore retail association, matching jacket and breeches, Ordnance Sergeant insignia, and scarce woven 82nd Division Liberty Loan-style shoulder patch. Although the original wearer remains unidentified, the surviving insignia and tailoring make this a particularly attractive example of an enlisted 82nd Division uniform from the closing period of WWI.
