Original U.S. WWI 40th Division Professionally Engraved Rare Early Seamless “Spun” M1910 Canteen & Cup with Cover - Named to Captain Joseph Webb, 159th Field Hospital

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous M1910 canteen professionally engraved by Captain Joseph Webb, 159th Field Hospital, 115th Sanitary Train, 40th Division. Both the canteen and cup are engraved very well, and are housed in a 1917 Dated cover.

On top of being gorgeously engraved, this example is an extremely scarce Seamless “Spun” canteen, meaning it has no seams. The cap and cap retaining ring around the neck is different from later produced 1910 canteens. From what we can find, it seems to be manufactured some time between early 1913 to 1915. This example has the “improved” neck ring design first introduced by Rock Island Arsenal in 1913. There are no maker marks visible on the canteen but is believed to have been produced by the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Co. Given its frequent use, the condition of the canteen is good, displaying the usual small dents and scratches to the body. The chain is still complete and attached to both the neck ring and top of the cap in serviceable condition.

The canteen are cup are both engraved:

CAPT. JOSEPH WEBB
M.C.U.S.A.
159TH FIELD HOSPITAL

The canteen and cup are both unmarked, which makes send being such an early set. This is a fantastic named set to the commander of Field Hospital 159 of the 40th Division, ready for further research and display!
