Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting M1917 Doughboy helmet shell worn by a member of the 110th Engineer Regiment, 35th Division, AEF. The left and right sides of the helmet are painted with a white 35th Division insignia within a black triangle with black dividing lines coming from the top of both triangles and coming from the rim at the front and back sides. This is an interesting almost camouflage pattern which could use some more research.
The 35th Division developed one of the more elaborate unit-identification systems used by an American division during WWI. Its basic insignia consisted of the Santa Fe cross, with different combinations of border and quadrant colors used to distinguish the division’s subordinate organizations. The 110th Engineer Regiment and Engineer Train were among the formations assigned their own color combinations within this system.
The helmet shell is stamped ZG 56 denoting American manufacture, but the helmet’s chinstrap bales appear to be two stacked atop each other, meaning this helmet was wartime-refurbished at a depot in France, a great detail. The liner is absent but much of the chinstrap is retained, though it is broken on one side.
The 110th Engineers served as the engineer regiment of the 35th Division during WWI. The regiment was organized in 1917 and served overseas with the division before returning to the United States in 1919. Later Army organizational histories identify the WWI 110th Engineers as the predecessor of the interwar 110th Engineer Regiment associated with the Missouri National Guard.
This helmet is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its ZG 56 American shell marking, 110th Engineers / 35th Division painted insignia, unusual bilateral triangular line pattern, surviving partial chinstrap, and apparent period repair or modification to the chinstrap-bale fittings. The unconventional paint scheme and altered hardware make it a particularly worthwhile example for additional comparison with documented 35th Division engineer helmets.
