Original Item. Only One Available. This is a gorgeous French-made overseas cap for a 1st Lieutenant of Infantry in the 2nd Division, American Expeditionary Forces. The cap bears an extremely scarce French-made enamel 2nd Division pin. This pin depicts the Indian Head in a white star on a blue shield background. This would traditionally indicate use by the 2nd Military Police & HQ Train, but these blue enamel pins were used by men of all units of the 2nd Division. The cap has faded blue piping indicating infantry, so this lieutenant was either of the 9th Infantry Regiment or the 23rd Infantry Regiment.
The cap is in great shape with the enamel pin on the right side and 1st Lieutenant bar on the left. The interior is lined with a dark red fabric with a burlap & leather sweatband that is still well-retained with service wear. This cap was certainly worn for a long period in France & Germany. The enamel pin is a screw back. There are two bobby pins in the hat to keep the middle part together, which was very often done by officers overseas. It appears the part has also been sewn shut which was another tactic to keep it closed.
This is a stunning overseas cap, one of the nicest 2nd Division examples we have offered, ready for further research and display.
