  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely grouping including a 1932-issued Purple Heart engraved to Private James F. Grout, Company M, 113th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division. Grout was wounded on October 11th, 1918 during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Also interesting is that Grout was an Irish-born immigrant.

The grouping includes Grout’s first-issue Purple Heart, numbered along the rim 22769 and hand-engraved James F. Grout. Also included is some of his uniform-removed insignia, including his 29th Division patch, honorable discharge chevron, and two overseas chevrons, denoting 12-17 months overseas. There’s also a small printed copy of his transportation log.

The Purple Heart is in good overall condition with some fraying to the ribbon as shown. There are some small moth holes in the insignia.

James F. Grout was born in Wolfhill, Ireland around 1890, and immigrated to the United States. He was inducted into the draft on April 25th, 1918 and was assigned to Company M, 113th Infantry Regiment. He served overseas from June 15th, 1918 until May 17th, 1919, seeing combat in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

This is a fantastic grouping, ready for further research and display!
