  • Original Item: Only One Set Available. During "The Great War" in the trenches, one of the most common obstacles to forward progress was barbed wire. Miles and miles of suspended wire were strung along both sides, and there was no way out of "No Man's Land" without getting through it. Various devices such as explosives and complicated cutters mounted on the muzzles of rifles were used. However, the most reliable and effective way to get through it remained hand held wire cutters.

Here we have a very nice set of U.S. WWI issue Trench Wire cutters marked U.S-DCHS.CO-1918, complete with an interwar Canvas Carrier. The cutters measure about 14 inches in overall length, and have a compound action double hinged design for increased cutting power. They also feature 2 1/2 inch long protrusions on the end to guide the barbed wire to the cutting blades.

They are in very good condition, though there is a bit of slop in the mechanics due to wear. The metal components show some signs of oxidation and wear, while the wooden grips have been wrapped in layers of tape to make them easier to grip.

The original canvas carrier measures about 8" x 4", with a securing strap and GI Belt hooks. It still has the original Quartermaster depot stamp on the back, dated several years after the war ended:

    JEFFERSONVILLE
    Q. M. I. D.
    1922.

The case is in very good condition, with some staining on the canvas from grease and light oxidation on the metal fittings. The securing strap is still fully functional, and keeps the wire cutters in place.

A very nice set of WWI Trench Wire Cutters, which possibly saw later service during WWII, ready to display!
