  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is an extensive original U.S. WWI trunk grouping belonging to Army Cook Samuel Z. Hare, who was inducted into military service on April 30, 1918. Hare was assigned to 2nd Company, 1st Battalion, 155th Depot Brigade at Camp Lee, Virginia, where he served as a cook until his discharge on July 7, 1919. The grouping preserves a broad selection of his personal equipment, clothing accessories, religious items, medals, photographs, and Camp Lee material together in the original wooden trunk.

    The group includes:

Hare’s wooden trunk stenciled with a Quartermaster stamp on the interior lid. There is a lock and latch included but it is broken off of the trunk and placed inside. One of the lid hinges has damage and there are no carry handles. It measures 13 ½ x 29 ½ x 17 ½”.
    - Seven great photographs from Hare’s service including studio portrait photos and more.
    - M1917 Doughboy Helmet, liner and chinstrap.
    - Pair of canvas leg gaiters, worn.
    - Army belt with interesting buckle similar to trench watch shrapnel guards.
    - M1910 Cartridge belt with heavy tearing and wear.
    - Straight razor in small box.
    - US WWI Gas mask in original bag, marked A 154 on the back. Heavy wear and damage to mask.
    - M1916 M1911 pistol holster by Perkins Campbell, dated 1917.
    - Three pocket bibles, one of which is named to Hare.
    - Hare’s WWI Victory medal, brooch torn away and tattered.
    - 28th Division patch.
    - United States Forces 1917-1919 medal, ribbon tattered.
    - M1910 Haversack with meat can pouch and mess kit, heavy wear across with staining.
    - “The Bayonet” Remembrance Book of Camp Lee, Virginia, a rare publication in great shape.
    - Small shaving mirror in bag.
    - Toothbrush in small tin.
    - Hatchet canvas cover. No hatchet.
    - There is a sheet inside that says Hale is in the 28th Division, but this is incorrect. He never went overseas, and was only a cook in the army in the United States.

The combination of the named trunk, Quartermaster marking, seven original photographs, M1917 helmet, gas mask, haversack, M1916 holster, medals, Bibles, personal grooming items, 28th Division patch, and Camp Lee remembrance book makes this a particularly complete and personal WWI grouping. More importantly, the material remains centered around the documented service of Samuel Z. Hare, whose assignment as a cook with the 155th Depot Brigade at Camp Lee gives the collection a clear individual and institutional history rather than representing an assembled assortment of unrelated wartime equipment.
