  • Original Item. Only One Available. The War of 1812 was a very strange War. The Americans invaded Canada, the British retaliated and burned Buffalo & the White House, Peace was declared and then the British lost the Battle of New Orleans because word had not yet been received that the War was over!

This is a phenomenal example of a high-ranking mounted officer’s saber with a gorgeous hilt, one of the most well-executed we have seen from this period. The style of gold-inlaid etchings found on this blade are of the highest caliber for the War of 1812 era, with the E Pluribus Unum Eagle on one side, with a cannon crossing a 15-Star Shield on the other side. The 15-Star flag was in use from 1795-1818, which further supports this being a Pre-War of 1812 Manufacture.

Overall it is 36⅝” long with a 31” long gold-inlaid single-edge curved blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some lovely etching on the first 21” of the blade, which was originally all gold inlaid, much of which still remains. The blade was likely originally fireblued but there is very little remaining. The blade has some lovely designs at the transition to bright steel, done by masking the blade with lacquer, which was later removed. There is some heavy staining and heavy oxidation on the lentirety of the blade, with areas of heavy pitting across. The gold-inlay is roughly 60% retained. There are some heavy chips in the blade as is expected with age, but it has held up tremendously well for its age overall.

The gorgeous hilt is one of the nicest we have ever seen, with a gorgeous hand-forged American Eagle motif with 13 individual stars on one side of the rain chape. The other side of the chape has an interesting motif of a castle tower with a rising sun above it? Certainly worthy of further research. The original bone grip has held up very well without any cracking, but the guard is now rather loose to the hilt. The eagle’s head pommel is incredibly executed with very detailed feathers. There is also a spot on the guard for attachment of a knot or other device.

This is one of the most tremendous War of 1812 officer’s swords we have offered, and certainly the most unique. This was obviously meant for heavy mounted combat, unlike most of these we see which are more meant for dress-wear. Comes ready for further research and display!
