Original U.S. War of 1812 Era Officer's Eagle Head Pommel Sword with Engraved Blade & Ribbed Bone Grip

Item Description

Original item: Only One Available. The War of 1812 was a very strange War. The Americans invaded Canada, the British retaliated and burned the White House, Peace was declared and then the British lost the Battle of New Orleans because no one realized the War was over!

Here we have a very upmarket original Eagle Headed U.S. Officer's sword from the 1812 War period. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "D" hand guard and a a very nice "open mouth" Eagle pommel. The grip is carved ribbed bone, and does have the expected cracks from age, with some repair attempts made at one point. It is possible that it at one time had a wire wrapping, though it does not look like it. The eagle's head is VERY well executed, and there is still lots of the original gilt finish on the hilt. It is however now loose on the blade, as is the crossguard.

The sword is 38 inches long overall, with a straight 32 1/2 inch single edged blade, with a broad fuller. It looks like at one point the sword was etched and partly gilt, very common on officer's swords, however the ornamentation is almost completely gone. Oxidation and wear have removed almost all, with only a small amount left near the cross guard.

A truly lovely early U.S. sword with loads of patina, ready to display!
