Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. The War of 1812 was a very strange War. The Americans invaded Canada, the British retaliated and burned Buffalo & the White House, Peace was declared and then the British lost the Battle of New Orleans because word had not yet been received that the War was over!
Here we have a very upmarket original Mounted Officer’s bone-gripped U.S. Officer's sword from the 1812 War period. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" handguard with a beautifully decorated ivory grip. The grip is carved ribbed ivory or bone, and is mostly intact, with lovely age toning and age lines, with a bit of loss and cracking. The patterns are very unique, with the middle appearing to be a “Rising Sun”. The grip and handguard are a bit loose due to the loss of material at the end.
Overall it is 34¼” long with a 30” long gold-inlaid single-edge curved blade, although heavy oxidation has worn away much of the inlay. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some lovely etching on the first 11” of the blade, which was originally all gold inlaid, some of which still remains. If this example was fire-blued, none of it remains. There is heavy staining and heavy oxidation on the majority of the blade. There are some very small chips in the blade as is expected with age, but it has held up tremendously well for its age. Some of the retained gold inlay includes the lovely US Shield motif on one side.
A very lovely War of 1812 period mounted officer’s sword, ready for further research and display.
