Original Item. Only One Available. Here we have a very upmarket original Mounted Officer’s ivory gripped U.S. Officer's sword from the 1812 War period. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" handguard with a beautifully decorated bone grip. The grip is carved ribbed ivory or bone, and is mostly intact, with lovely age toning and age lines, with a bit of loss and cracking. The leather blade buffer is still present, so the blade is still very tight to the hilt. Overall it is 37¾” long, with a 32¾” long engraved and gold inlaid single edge curved blade.
The blade of this example is nothing short of magnificent. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some great engraving on the first half of the blade, which is still all gold enhanced, especially on the ricasso. Also, most of the beautiful "fire blue" finish is present on the first half of the blade, something we rarely see! There is some wear, but the blue/purple color is still quite present, and even has some lovely designs at the transition to bright steel, done by masking the blade with lacquer, which was later removed. The motifs are phenomenal, with the U.S. Eagle Seal, an “Indian Maiden” head, and more. The spine of the blade is marked with a stylized 2, and there may be more information under the crossguard, but we wouldn’t dare to check.
The two gorgeous American Eagle rain chapes are retained and in glorious condition. This is one of the nicest examples of these early American sabers we have offered, and it’s almost a blessing that there’s no scabbard, so the gorgeous metalwork is well-retained.
A truly gorgeous early American sword, ready for further research and display.
