  • Original Item. Only One Available. The War of 1812 was a very strange War. The Americans invaded Canada, the British retaliated and burned Buffalo & the White House, Peace was declared and then the British lost the Battle of New Orleans because word had not yet been received that the War was over!

Here we have a very upmarket original Mounted Officer’s bone-gripped U.S. Officer's sword from the 1812 War period. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" handguard with a beautifully decorated ivory grip. The grip is carved ribbed ivory or bone, and is mostly intact, with lovely age toning and age lines, with a bit of loss and cracking. The grip and handguard are somewhat loose due to the loss of material at the end.

Overall it is 38¾” long with a 34⅛” long fireblued gold-inlaid single-edge curved blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some lovely etching on the first 11” of the blade, which was originally all gold inlaid, much of which still remains. Also, much of the beautiful "fire blue" finish is present on the first half of the blade, something we rarely see! There is some wear, but the blue/purple color is still quite present, and even has some lovely designs at the transition to bright steel, done by masking the blade with lacquer, which was later removed. There is some heavy staining and heavy oxidation on the last 9 inches of the blade, as well as a bit near the cross guard, but nothing major. There are some very small chips in the blade as is expected with age, but it has held up tremendously well for its age.

This gorgeous sword comes complete with its original scarce all-brass construction scabbard. The vast majority of swords from the War of 1812 period has brass-mounted leather scabbards, but this is one of the very scarce all-brass examples. The scabbard has heavy denting, which is far more likely to happen with a brass scabbard than with steel. There are some very small bends where the material is separating, but thankfully the structural integrity of the scabbard is great. The brass has darkened heavily, but the two suspension rings are still fully intact.

The sound this sword makes when being unsheathed from an all-brass scabbard is absolutely astounding. A truly gorgeous early American sword, ready for further research and display.
