Original U.S. War of 1812 Eagle Head USMC Saber with Original Sword Belt

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. War of 1812 period U.S.M.C officer’s eagle pommel sword. Bone gripped brass mounted saber not only with an excellent gilt eagle head pommel, but two standing eagles with spread wings on the langets above globes.

Stirrup guard hilt quillon with disk slightly downturned, original bone grips with a nice cream-colored patina. Grips are solid, only one narrow line, with beautiful engraving. Eagle on the pommel is exceptionally detailed with an open moth and intricate feathering.

Eagles on the langets are a very early style long-necked eagles looking griffin-like, standing on a globe with a wreath that enfolds it on either side, and might date the sword somewhat pre-1812. The blade is straight with a good edge and point, faint silver in color with some gray areas. Etching can be found under the langets and traces of the original gilding remain in some of the etched lines.

Leather scabbard is decorated with gilt naval knots at the hanger hooks. Also included is the original sword belt with gilt buckle featuring the same early style long-necked eagle clutching an anchor.
