  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent US Vietnam War era Combat Vehicle Crewman (CVC) Helmet model T56-6. These Helmets were worn by crewmen aboard Tanks and other Combat Vehicles. This example is painted in white across the front with “XIN LOI CARLIE”, a play on the common phrase “XIN LOI CHARLIE” or “Sorry Charlie”, Charlie being the U.S. military slang term for the Viet Cong (derived from "Victor Charlie" in the NATO phonetic alphabet). Under this is the written name POLLOK. The Helmet comes complete with headphones built in and adjustable microphone, which are attached to the Transceiver mounted on the left side of the helmet.

The CVC helmet was made of laminated ballistic nylon and was worn by crew members requiring access to a vehicle's communication system. The helmet was intended to offer head protection inside the vehicle but it did provide some protection against shrapnel. Both the Army and the Marine Corps used the CVC helmet in a number of vehicles.

The suspension retains a maker tag reading:

    HELMET, COMBAT VEHICLE CREWMAN
    SIZE REGULAR
    SIERRA ENGINEERING CO.
    OCT. 31, 1966. CONTRACT NO. DSA-100-67-C-0205

This denotes a 1967 contract date. The suspension and headphones are in good shape with all snaps functional .The microphone and power cord are also in good order.

The combination of the T56-6 ballistic shell, dated Sierra Engineering manufacturer label, FY1967 contract, integrated headphones, adjustable microphone, left-side transceiver, surviving power cord, and period-style personalized inscription makes this a particularly strong Vietnam War CVC helmet. The named and painted exterior adds an individual element to an already complete example of the communications headgear used by American armored-vehicle crews during the conflict.
