Original Item. Only One Available. This is an excellent large format U.S. Marine Corps recruiting sign from the late 1950s to early 1960s period, featuring the familiar “Time Tested” slogan above a prominent Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia set against a background recalling the battles and wars of Marine Corps history. Constructed as a substantial double-sided metal sign, probably steel, it measures an impressive 29 ¾ x 39 ½” and carries the Marine Corps publication or recruiting material number NAVMC 6653M at the lower corner. The bold graphics, large size, and emphasis on the Corps' long combat record would have made it an effective recruiting display.
This sign would have been hung at a recruiting center or special recruiting event and is a very large, double sided, metal (probably steel) sign. This particular version features a Marine insignia with a list of all the wars the Marines have fought in behind it. The top of the sign says "Time Tested" and the bottom says "U.S. Marines". The back of the poster is covered in now-stuck paper that it was likely wrapped in when in storage. Luckily, the front side is outstanding and displays like a dream.
The sign measures 29 ¾ x 39 ½” and is in great shape minus some scratches and scuffing on both sides with the paper now stuck to the back. The bottom corner reads NAVMC 6653M.
The design is an especially effective example of mid 20th century Marine Corps recruiting imagery. Rather than relying solely on contemporary photographs of recruits or equipment, it draws upon the institutional history of the Corps as the central recruiting theme. The phrase “Time Tested” reinforces this approach, presenting past Marine service as evidence of the organization's continuing identity and traditions.
With its very large 29 ¾ x 39 ½” dimensions, double-sided metal construction, bold Eagle, Globe, and Anchor design, surviving NAVMC 6653M marking, and strong front display surface, this is an impressive piece of original Marine Corps recruiting material. The scratches, scuffing, and adhered paper on the reverse are honest condition issues, but they have relatively little effect on the outstanding primary display face. It would make an excellent focal point in a collection devoted to U.S. Marine Corps recruiting material, mid 20th century military advertising, Marine Corps history, or Vietnam era USMC memorabilia.
