  • Original Item: Only One Available. The M1 helmet is a combat helmet that was used by the United States military from World War II until 1985, when it was succeeded by the PASGT helmet. For over forty years, the M1 was standard issue for the U.S. military. The M1 helmet has become an icon of the American military, with its design inspiring other militaries around the world.

Vietnam War era M-1 helmet shells have a set of swivel (movable) chinstrap loops called bales and a manganese steel rim. These rims had non-magnetic qualities that reduced the chance of error readings when placed around certain sensitive equipment (such as a compass). In WWII the shells had Stainless Steel rims, however these would easily lose paint, and the shine the produced without paint was a liability.

This helmet is a fine example and still retains all of its original Vietnam War parts and the shell has the original OD Green finish on the interior and exterior of the helmet. We were not able to locate the helmets heat lot code, but that is not uncommon. It still has the correct complete chin strap, secured behind the helmet as was often done.

The helmet has had some excellent personalized statements added to the outside of the camouflage cover. These include a Peace Sign over "Fortunate Son?" on the left side and another Peace sign over "It Ain't Me!" on the other, which are references to the Creedence Clearwater Revival song Fortunate Son, which references how the Rich get the Poor to fight their wars. There is also the statement "NAM NUTS" on the top of the helmet, and "ASSASIN" on the front. From what we can tell, these were added very long ago, and we do not doubt that they are period.

The liner is correct high pressure late 1960s issue liner, which features a simplified rigging without any lacing in the center. This allowed for a much sturdier design, adjustable via buckles at the ends of the three straps. The rigging unfortunately is in somewhat rough shape, with the sweatband mostly deteriorated, and the support rigging it attaches to torn through in 4 different places, so the sweatband is somewhat loose inside the liner. The rear support strap is present on this example, something we do not often see.

The shell chin strap is original, and the USMC cover is original and in very good condition.  It has some stains and dirt, as well as wear around the edge, and does have a stitched repair on the rear where it meets the rim, which runs down one of the "fingers". It is marked on the underside of one of the flaps with the contract information:

    COVER HELMET CAMOUFLAGE
    CONTRACT No. DSA 100 69 C 1921
    F.S.N. 8415-261-6833

These helmets have become increasingly difficult to find in recent years, especially genuine Vietnam War issue ones from the USMC, with some great personalization. Almost certainly to appreciate in value year after year!
