Item Description
Original Items: Only One Lot Available. Now this is a lovely grouping attributed to Major Phillips of the 226th Aviation “Mohawk” Battalion “Hunter-Killer”. The items in this grouping all bear Vietnam War era dates as well as late Cold War (1980s). The flight helmet has to be the highlight of the grouping as it is one of the nicer, service used examples we have been able to offer recently. You do not want to miss out on this grouping!
The items in the lot:
- HGU-2A/P Flight Helmet With Oxygen Mask: The Type HGU-2A/P protective flying helmet was standard issue for U.S. Air Force flight crews during the early 1960s. First issued in 1961, the HGU-2A/P was an improved version of the HGU-2/P by the addition of ventilation holes, extra padding, and the H-154/AIC headset.
This example is in fantastic condition. The helmet retains the original tinted visor with locking wheel at the top. From the appearance of the helmet, we do believe it to be complete. The label has been retained and is offered in a size large by Gentex.
- Unissued 1988 Dated OV-1 Aircraft Survival Vest With Kit Bag: Offered in wonderful condition and is a size large.
- B-7 Parachutists Life Preserver Dated 1965: Though incomplete, this is a fantastic example of a scarce underarm flotation device, as used for water landings and or bailouts over water.
- LPU-10/P Underarm Pneumatic Life Preserver Dated 1982 (Unissued, Complete): The LPU-10/P is designed to be worn under parachute and restraint harnesses without causing interference. It is approved for use during flights over water and near water obstacles. The LPU-10/P consists of two neoprene coated fabric flotation cells, each packed into a flat envelope-type container. This life preserver incorporates an inflator with a cell-venting capability that eliminates the need for a breathing clip. The inflator lever locks in the up position and the valve stem is short and does not have valve cores. The removal of the valve core allows venting of the cell until the inflator is actuated. The oral tube valve pocket is also eliminated from the cell container on this assembly. The LPU-10/P has no provision for the installation of accessories or survival equipment.
- 4” x 4 ½” Photo: We believe the photo to be of Phillips but due to lack of information on the Major, we are uncertain.
- K-2B Flying Coveralls With Insignia and Name Tape: The lightweight K-2B flight suit was made of cotton and was not fire retardant, unlike the Orange and Khaki summer coveralls. Instead it was treated with a Borax solution in-country to ensure aircrew were fire protected. The suits would have to be regularly retreated with Borax to guarantee ongoing protection. Offered in wonderful condition.
A fantastic grouping that comes more than ready for further research and display.
